Chiang Mai is a city located in the mountains of northern Thailand. It is best known for its historic temples, night markets, stunning views, and outdoor activities. This city is a must during your visit to Thailand.
While there are preferred times to visit Chiang Mai, it is enjoyable at any time of the year. In fact, Chiang Mai became my favorite destination during my trip in December 2022.
If you intend to take a trip in December, some crucial factors must be considered. This post will cover everything you need to know about visiting Chiang Mai in December and things to do.
Now, let’s get to it!
Is December a Good Time To Visit Chiang Mai?
Yes, December is a great time to visit Chiang Mai. It is one of the best months to visit the city, and it experiences warm temperatures with plenty of sunny skies.
December is the cool season, a popular time for tourists. Rain chances are low, and you can enjoy the many outdoor activities in the area. Given that, get ready to explore all the temples, nature sites, and markets you can handle!
Chiang Mai Weather in December
Chiang Mai’s weather in December is one of the dryest and warm periods compared to most months throughout the year. In December, the average temperatures experience a high of 83°F (28°C) and a low of 58°F (14°C). Outside of the rainy season, this is one of the best months to visit Chiang Mai.
The warm and dry weather sets the perfect ambiance for exploring this charming city and its surrounding natural wonders. As this month is one of the peak tourist months, there’ll be plenty of cultural events and activities to enjoy.
This is an ideal time to visit temples, enjoy national parks, or explore the night markets. Another great choice is visiting Elephant Nature Park, which is regarded as Thailand’s most ethical elephant sanctuary.
Additionally, visiting Chiang Mai in December will avoid the rainy season. Thailand experiences three main seasons: the hot season from March until May, the wet season from May through October, and the cool season from November to February.
While the hot season also experiences dry weather, the heat may be challenging for those struggling with hot temperatures. For example, April is the hottest month in Thailand and can reach temperatures as high as 97°F (36°C). Certain outdoor activities may also be more tiresome from the heat.
Holidays in Chiang Mai in December
Several holidays are celebrated in Chiang Mai during the month of December. The first widely recognized holiday is King Bhumibol’s Birthday, which is on the 5th of December. The 5th also marks Thailand’s Father’s Day.
This day honors the late King Bhumibol, the late Thai monarch. Several events occur in memory of the king and his dedication to Thailand. You may also notice decorations and locals wearing yellow on this day.
Another holiday celebrated is Constitution Day on December 10th. This day observes the anniversary of Thailand’s establishment as a constitutional monarchy in 1932. It has various festivities, including fireworks shows and parades.
While Christmas is not an official Thai holiday, being in Chiang Mai for it is still exciting! You may find some decorations spread throughout the city at local businesses. It’s even possible to find some Christmas-themed events to attend.
If you happen to be in Chiang Mai during New Year’s Eve, you’re in for an elevated experience! The city will have decor and activities, including night market entertainment, fireworks shows, and countdown parties. Lanterns are also released and are a symbol of bringing good luck and joyous new beginnings.
New Year’s Eve is also a great time to visit the temples, shop, or take a food tour. There’s no shortage of options to help ring in the new year!
What To Wear in Chiang Mai in December
Regarding what to wear in Chiang Mai in December, several suggestions exist.
As previously stated, Chiang Mai is warm and dry throughout the day in December. For that reason, you can opt in for summer clothes such as dresses, skirts, short sleeves, pants, and shorts during the day. Lightweight materials, including linen and cotton, will help you remain cool.
On the other hand, the nighttime weather can potentially be chillier. It’s best to stay prepared by bringing a light jacket, cardigan, pants, and long-sleeve shirt.
Additionally, if you’re visiting sites with high elevations in the mountains, I recommend packing warmer. While it was warm in Chiang Mai city center, during my excursion to Doi Inthanon, it got cold with added wind chill. Having a jacket was my best friend that day!
Some excursions and attractions in Chiang Mai require a lot of walking. That being the case, packing comfortable shoes, including sneakers or active sandals, is your best bet. Trust me; it’ll make exploring temples and markets a lot easier.
👉TRAVEL TIP: When visiting temples and religious sites in Thailand, you must dress modestly. Ensure that you are not revealing shoulders and are wearing knee-length or longer bottoms.
With their light fabric and endless design options, harem pants are great in Chiang Mai and Thailand. Pashmina and shawls are another great choice for additional comfort. You can easily find both items at the night markets and stores across Chiang Mai.
Things To Do in Chiang Mai
With some of the best weather in the year, many places will be enjoyable to visit in Chiang Mai in December.
However, there are so many things to do in Chiang Mai that it might feel overwhelming, especially if you have a shorter stay. To help you out, here are some of the top things to do in the “Rose of the North.”
1. Doi Inthanon National Park
Doi Inthanon is easily one of the must-sees while in Chiang Mai. Nicknamed “the roof of Thailand,” it is the highest point in the country! At 8,415 feet (2,565 meters), the views of the surrounding landscapes are stunning and worth the trek.
It’s easy to see why this is a popular excursion, between the waterfalls, lush landscapes, and serene views. Surrounded by flora and fauna, you’ll see Chiang Mai live up to its nickname. Many tours visit Doi Inthanon and provide great information.
One of the premier features of visiting Doi Inthanon National Park is the Royal Twin Pagodas. These two incredible towers honor Thailand’s King and Queen. As you admire the pagodas and flowers, you can appreciate the surrounding views.
Additionally, if you want to escape the heat, the temperatures at Doi Inthanon are cooler. This provides a great opportunity for a change in the climate.

2. Night Bazaar
If you want something exciting after the sun sets, head to Chiang Mai’s night markets, known as the Night Bazaar.
The Night Bazaar is a vibrant market that locals and tourists worldwide visit daily. Whether you are looking for souvenirs, delicious Thai food, or entertainment, the night market provides a reason for anyone to visit.
One of the prime features of the Night Bazaar is the array of goods that you can find. This ranges from fashion to handmade crafts and skillfully crafted art. If you need to grab some souvenirs, this is the perfect spot.
Additionally, food lovers will appreciate the paradise that awaits them. You’ll be able to find a wide selection of street food. Whether you’re craving mango sticky rice, pad Thai, or other cultural delicacies, there’ll be no shortage of options.
Need even more convincing? There’s also a variety of entertainment at the night market. You can enjoy live musical performances between the many vendor stalls as you immerse yourself in the Night Bazaar’s offerings.
3. Doi Suthep
Doi Suthep, a stunning mountain in the Chiang Mai district, is one destination you don’t want to miss out on. Visiting the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple is one of the top things to do in Chiang Mai. Not only do you get fantastic views of the surrounding landscape, but you can also appreciate the sacred site’s beauty.
You have two main options for reaching the temple: walk or get a taxi. It’s easy to flag down a red songthaew (red truck taxi) in the Chiang Mai center.
On the other hand, if you walk, it will be a few hours from Chiang Mai Center and around 50 minutes from Wat Pha Lat temple.
The temple is renowned for its golden chedi and traditional architecture. Visiting here will allow you to better understand Thai culture and the significance of these sacred grounds. As you explore, soak up this site’s panoramic views and serene atmosphere.

4. Elephant Sanctuary
Visiting an elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai is an unforgettable experience. Having the opportunity to interact with the gentle giants ethically is heartwarming. Elephant Nature Park is said to be the most ethical elephant sanctuary in Thailand.
Unlike traditional elephant tourist attractions that injure and abuse these animals, ethical sanctuaries focus on the well-being and conservation of the elephants. In return, this provides the elephants with a safe space to live freely.
As a volunteer, you are guided on how to interact with the animals appropriately and have the chance to learn about their often sad history before the sanctuary. By visiting, you can better understand their challenges and actions that can help them. Additionally, supporting an ethical sanctuary directly contributes to elephant conservation and safety.
5. Cooking Class
Participating in a cooking class in Chiang Mai is a fun and immersive way to learn about Thai cuisine. Everything from its wide-ranging flavors, herbs, vegetables, and spices makes Thai food a delight worldwide. In Chiang Mai, these cooking classes provide a hands-on experience to learn Thai cuisine from local chefs.
The classes are interactive, even visiting local markets for fresh ingredients. Participants get hands-on experience creating classic dishes like Pad Thai, Thai curries, and mango sticky rice while learning the secrets behind Thai cuisine. And the best part? Getting to try all the prepared delicious dishes!
