Chiang Mai’s weather in December is one of the dryest and warm periods compared to most months throughout the year. In December, the average temperatures experience a high of 83°F (28°C) and a low of 58°F (14°C). Being outside of the rainy season, this is one of the best months to visit Chiang Mai.
The warm and dry weather sets the perfect ambiance for exploring this charming city and its surrounding natural wonders. As this month is one of the peak tourist months, there’ll be plenty of cultural events and activities to enjoy.
This is an ideal time to visit temples, enjoy national parks, or explore the night markets. Another great choice is visiting Elephant Nature Park, which is regarded as Thailand’s most ethical elephant sanctuary.

On the other hand, the nighttime weather can potentially be chillier. It’s best to stay prepared by bringing a light jacket, cardigan, pants, and long-sleeve shirt.
Additionally, if you’re visiting sites with high elevations in the mountains, I recommend packing warmer. While it was warm in Chiang Mai city center, during my excursion to Doi Inthanon, it got cold with added wind chill. Having a jacket was my best friend that day!
Some excursions and attractions in Chiang Mai require a lot of walking. That being the case, packing comfortable shoes, including sneakers or active sandals, is your best bet. Trust me; it’ll make exploring temples and markets a lot easier.
👉TRAVEL TIP: When visiting temples and religious sites in Thailand, you must dress modestly. Ensure that you are not revealing shoulders and are wearing knee-length or longer bottoms.
With their light fabric and endless design options, harem pants are great in Chiang Mai and Thailand. Pashmina and shawls are another great choice for additional comfort. You can easily find both items at the night markets and stores across Chiang Mai.

However, there are so many things to do in Chiang Mai that it might feel overwhelming, especially if you have a shorter stay. To help you out, here are some of the top things to do in the “Rose of the North.”
1. Doi Inthanon National Park
Doi Inthanon is easily one of the must-sees while in Chiang Mai. Nicknamed “the roof of Thailand,” this is the highest point in the country! With the highest elevation at 8,415 feet (2,565 meters), the views of the surrounding landscapes are stunning and worth the trek.
It’s easy to see why this is a popular excursion between the waterfalls, lush landscapes, and serene views. As you’re surrounded by flora and fauna, you’ll see Chiang Mai live up to its nickname. Many tours visit Doi Inthanon and provide great information.
One of the premier features of visiting Doi Inthanon National Park is the Royal Twin Pagodas. These two incredible towers are in honor of Thailand’s King and Queen. As you take in the beauty of the pagodas and flowers, you can appreciate the surrounding views.

You have two main options for reaching the temple: walk or get a taxi. It’s easy to flag down a red songthaew (red truck taxi) in the Chiang Mai center. On the other hand, if you walk, it will be a few hours from Chiang Mai Center and around 50 minutes from Wat Pha Lat temple.
