Top 5 Best Things To Do in Kimolos
Visiting Kimolos is a must during your Greece vacation.
I hope that this post is encouraging you to visit, so next are 5 MUST-DOs when you arrive:
1. Wander Around Chorio
A visit to the Chorio is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Kimolos. Since the island’s early history, it has been the only village.
Chorio has precisely what you expect from a Cycladic village: whitewashed houses, winding pathways to get lost in, bougainvillea, and blue dome churches.
In the center, you’ll find a few cafes, shops, and taverns. One of the most beautiful areas of the Chorio is in front of the Arzantiera shop.
Several important landmarks are also in Chorio, including the Panagia Odigitria Church and the Castle of Kimolos.
2. Relax at the Beaches
A trip to Kimolos is incomplete without visiting at least one of the beaches. Like Milos, the island has unique beaches with impressive rock formations and crystal-clear waters.
As if it couldn’t get any better, the beaches are not crowded aside from July and August, Greece’s peak season. However, you still will find them a lot quieter than on Milos.
Psathi is an easily accessible beach and the first one you will see as it’s in the port. You can find sunbeds to rent and cafes, restaurants, and shops nearby.
Prassa is arguably the best beach in Kimolos. This beach has white sand, clear turquoise waters, and hot springs.
During the peak season, arrive early to rent a bed or claim a shady spot under one of the trees. You shouldn’t have to worry as much outside of the busy months.
👉TRAVEL TIP: Getting to Prassa requires driving on a rocky, dirt path. Be gentle with your rental car when reaching the beach.
Other beaches in Kimolos that are worth visiting include Aliki, Kalamitsi, Karas, Rema, and Mavrospilia (especially for sunset),
3. Explore Goupa
While the Chorio is the only village on the island, you can also find smaller settlements to explore. Goupa is a beautiful seaside settlement and one of the most picturesque areas of Kimolos.
This coastal spot is characterized by its whitewashed houses, syrmata (colorful boat houses), and beautiful coves. Additionally, you can see “The Elephant Rock,” a natural rock formation that’s, you guessed it— in the shape of an elephant.
The views in Goupa are among my favorite in the Cyclades. The crystal-clear water and quietness create the perfect setting for swimming or relaxing in the sun.
4. Visit the Castle of Kimolos
Inside Chorio, you will find the Castle of Kimolos. It was built to protect from pirates and consisted of two housing complexes, the Inner Castle and Outer Castle.
The Outer Castle walls were also the fortress’s defensive walls. While the interior of the Castle is in ruin today, this site offers a glimpse into the island’s history.
You can still visit the gate, church, and some outer houses among the preserved areas.
5. Hike a Trail
Aside from visiting beaches and settlements, hiking is one of the best things to do in Kimolos. The island’s trails offer a chance to explore stunning landscapes and discover hidden gems.
While on the paths, you can discover hidden coves and get panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and neighboring islands.
One of the most popular hiking trails takes you to Skiadi— a natural rock formation shaped like a mushroom.
Additional routes take you along the coast to beaches like Ellinika and Monastiria.
