While I have yet to visit a Greek island that I dislike, I asked myself this question before visiting. Syros is not a popular island destination among tourists, but I was searching for a more authentic experience in the Cyclades.
Now, after spending three days in Syros, I am confident that I can clearly answer whether it is worth a visit.

Is Syros Worth Visiting in 2024?
To give the simple answer to your question… yes, Syros is worth visiting!
Before my visit in September 2023, I barely knew about Syros’s existence! Most tourists choose famous islands like Mykonos, Santorini, and Paros when they visit the Cyclades islands.
A Greek local in Naxos recommended the island of Syros to me. Having previously traveled to eight other Greek islands I loved, I took their word for it. In the end, I was so glad that I decided to go!
Syros’s blend of beautiful architecture, stunning beaches, views, and history make it well worth visiting. Not being one of the more touristy islands, Syros provides a more authentic Greek experience and offers fewer crowds and lower prices than what you find in Santorini.
The island of Syros provides a calm, relaxing atmosphere. It’s the perfect island to sunbathe on gorgeous beaches, explore its winding streets, and dine at delicious local restaurants.
While it doesn’t have the level of liveliness you find somewhere like Paros or Mykonos, the capital, Ermoupoli, is full of activities, tavernas, and nightlife.
Syros is also the capital of the Cyclades and remains lively throughout the year. As with the rest of Greece, the busiest time will be the peak season months of July and August.
11 Things To Do in Syros
Many tourists overlook or just don’t know about the island of Syros. There are various exciting things to do that make Syros worth visiting. Next, we’ll take a look at some of Syros’s top 11 things to do and attractions I recommend you do when visiting:
1. Ano Syros
While most activity in Syros happens in the capital, Ermoupoli, visiting the fortress town of Ano Syros is a must!
Ano Syros is a charming and historic destination that allows you to step back in time and get lost in its narrow cobblestone streets. This is easily one of the best things to do in Syros.
One of the best parts about Ano Syros is the panoramic views it provides of Syros’s landscape. The town was strategically built on a hill away from the port to protect its residents from pirate attacks.
Today, we can appreciate the stunning views from Ano Syros, which assisted the town in looking out for pirates.
In addition to the sweeping views, you can appreciate the well-preserved architecture. A perfect mix of medieval and classic Cycladic architecture is spread throughout its whitewashed houses and colorful doors.
In return, Ano Syros allows you to see a historic version of the newer Cycladic architectural style like what you’d see on Paros Island.
Ano Syros is the perfect destination to learn about the island’s history, enjoy sweeping views, and appreciate its charming atmosphere.
👉TRAVEL TIP: If you choose to stay in Ano Syros like I did, just be aware that most restaurants do not open until 7 PM.
2. Catholic Cathedral of Saint George
One of the best sites to visit in Ano Syros is the Catholic Cathedral of Saint George.
Completed in the 13th century, the church was ruined and rebuilt three separate times throughout its history. The church you can visit today is the product of its 1834 construction.
This historic church is home to stunning architecture and interior design. You’ll be surrounded by beautiful frescoes and marble columns when you enter. Other buildings surrounding the church’s site include a bell tower and the historical archive.
A premier feature of the church is that it sits on the highest point of Ano Syros. As a result, this can provide you with panoramic views of Syros and even nearby islands such as Delos and Tinos.
3. Town Hall of Ermoupoli
One of the top attractions in the capital of Syros is the Town Hall of Ermoupoli. This 19th-century neoclassical building is well worth visiting in Syros.
The Town Hall of Ermoupoli is often regarded as one of Greece’s most beautiful and largest town halls.
In addition to the building’s stunning exterior, it also holds an impressive interior design. The halls and rooms are decorated with paintings, arched doorways, and chandeliers.
Several other architectural styles, including Tuscan and Ionic, can also be found throughout the interior.
Town Hall of Ermoupoli also serves as an administrative center for Syros, home to various organizations and services, and the Archaeological Museum of Syros and the Court of Law.
Opening hours for the town hall are from 8 AM- 3 PM, and entrance is free.
4. Church of Saint Nicholas
The Church of Saint Nicholas is one of Syros’s most significant churches and landmarks. Completed in the 19th century, the church is located in the center of Ermoupoli, near Miaouli Square. This is one of the most recommended things to do in Syros.
One of the most striking features of the church lies within its interior. You can find a lot of stunning decor and design, including frescoes, chandeliers, marble columns, and more intricate details that create a unique glamor.
Whether you’re religious or not, this church should at least be admired from the outside during a Syros trip. The picturesque blue dome is viewable and admirable from many points across Ermoupoli.
5. Galissas Beach
Gallisas Beach is easily one of the best beaches in Syros and also the most popular beach. Between its stretch of golden sands and blue, transparent waters, the beach is the perfect spot for leisurely relaxation and swimming. Additionally, Galissas is an excellent location to catch a sunset in the evening.
Galissas Beach not only has aesthetic appeal but also offers convenience. Its position on the island’s southwestern coast is only around 4 miles (7 kilometers) from Ermoupoli, ensuring easy access by bus, taxi, or boat.
The beach also has amenities like sunbeds and umbrellas, guaranteeing a comfortable day by the shore.
The nearby village of Galissas presents various dining options and lodging choices, enhancing this beach’s appeal as a practical and enjoyable destination for locals and tourists.
6. Apollon Theater
The Apollon Theater in Syros is a significant historical landmark, making it a must-see if you are interested in the island’s culture. Completed in 1864, this architectural gem is a testament to the island’s rich heritage.
In addition to its historical value, the Apollon Theater remains an important center for the arts. It hosts diverse performances, from classical concerts to theater productions, providing a platform for local and international artists.
Furthermore, the theater’s location in the center of Ermoupoli ensures easy accessibility, allowing you to explore the charming cafes and shopping in the surrounding area.
7. Asteria Beach
While it may not be your typical beach, Asteria Beach in Syros is worth a visit. This beach does not have the golden sand that Greece is known for but instead consists of a concrete platform with a few umbrellas. So, why would you want to go?
It’s an optimal destination for swimming as you can jump into the surrounding blue waters.
In addition, it’s not a crowded beach, thus offering you a relaxing atmosphere while still being within the capital. While you probably won’t spend long at this beach, it’s still worth seeing to at least admire the views.
👉TRAVEL TIP: Be careful where you place your belongings around this beach, as the concrete platform can flood due to waves.
Before or after you’re done at the beach, stop at Ciel Beach Bar. Here, you can dine, enjoy cocktails and refreshments, and lounge on sunbeds; I greatly enjoyed this place! This beach bar also plays trendy music and offers superb service.
8. Kini Beach
If you’re still thinking about what to do in Syros, then Kini Beach is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a peaceful coastal experience. This beach has a calm and inviting atmosphere, with sandy shores and gentle waters.
In return, it’s the perfect place to enjoy a tranquil day by the water and bask in the sun.
At Kini Beach, you can immerse yourself in local Greek culture, as several traditional tavernas and eateries offer authentic cuisine.
A restaurant that I enjoyed at Kini Beach was Dioskouroi, located right next to the shore. Kini is also a fishing village, allowing you to savor the freshly caught delights from the fishermen.
Conveniently located on the western coast of Syros, this beach is easily reachable by bus, taxi, or rental car. Its position provides stunning views over the Aegean Sea, setting the stage for a peaceful evening at one of the best beaches in Syros.
9. Do a Greek Cooking Class
One of the exciting things to do in Syros is take a cooking class to make authentic Greek cuisine.
Doing a cooking class is a great way to dive deep into the heart of Greek cuisine and culture. Participating in the course will also allow you to see how the locals live as you’re guided with warm hospitality.

10. Day Trip to Tinos or Mykonos
During your time in Syros, you can consider taking a day trip to Tinos or Mykonos, two gorgeous neighboring islands. A ferry ride from Syros to Tinos is a hassle-free choice, especially if you want to explore more Greek islands.
A day trip to Tinos can be full of activities appreciating its picturesque landscape and unique culture. In Tinos, you can explore several charming villages like Pyrgos and enjoy the marble crafts, relax on its beautiful beaches, and visit one of the wineries.
Alternatively, you can take a day trip to Mykonos for a livelier and more cosmopolitan experience. The ferry from Syros to Mykonos is a convenient way to enjoy the vibrant nightlife, stunning beaches, and luxury shopping the island offers.
While the island can be expensive, it’s worth your time! A great way to save on a Mykonos experience is visiting in shoulder season months like May and June.
Some great things to do in Mykonos for a day trip include exploring the winding streets of Mykonos Town and experiencing one of the world-famous beach clubs.
This is a great chance to find a lively party atmosphere since Syros won’t match the party culture of Santorini or Mykonos.
You can’t go wrong with either island! If you have time, I recommend visiting both. However, if you are doing day trips, catch the earliest ferry so you don’t run short on time.

While you can find traditional Greek staples such as moussaka, gyros, and pastitsio at many places, there are also local dishes. Some local specialties I recommend you try during your visit include San Michali (hard cheese) and sysira (pork).
Delicious restaurants can be found throughout Syros. There’s a high concentration of local favorites in the capital. I particularly enjoyed Seminario Restaurant during my stay for Greek cuisine.

Syros, a hidden treasure of the Cyclades, is known for several distinguishing reasons. First, the island has a significant cultural heritage, as seen in its neoclassical architecture and historical sites.
Ermoupoli, Syros’s capital, is a prime example where you can appreciate its historical architecture, such as the Town Hall of Ermoupoli and the Church of Saint Nicholas.
Syros is also home to a notable arts scene. The island hosts an annual International Film Festival, attracting filmmakers and film fanatics worldwide. One of the best destinations to appreciate the arts in Syros is the Apollon Theater in the capital.

When choosing where to stay in Syros, you have several options. Whether you wish to stay at one of the beaches, the lively capital, or in one of the charming towns, there are many guesthouses, short-term apartments, and hotels in Syros.

Choosing which part of Syros is the best will depend on your preferences. Next, I’ll dive into the highest recommended areas to stay at for a first-time visit.
Ermoupoli
Ermoupoli, the island’s capital, is a popular choice for those who wish to be in the heart of liveliness. In addition, Ermoupoli provides easy access to the nearby restaurants, shops, and the island’s different regions.
Ano Syros
If you’re looking for the best panoramic views of Syros, then Ano Syros is one of the best choices. Not only will you get some of the island’s best views, but you’ll also be in a significant historical destination.
Ano Syros provides the opportunity to get lost in its whitewashed roads and step back in time.

Galissas
If you want your trip to be focused on the beach, the coastal village of Galissas is an excellent option. Here, you’ll find beachfront hotels and apartments with stunning sea views, making it an ideal choice for travelers seeking to relax in the sun.
How To Get to Syros
Regarding how to get to Syros, you have two options: ferry or flight. When I visited Syros, I went by ferry from Santorini, a very efficient transportation mode.
The most common option is by ferry. Many ferry routes are from Athens’s Piraeus port and other islands in the Cyclades. Several routes depart from Athens daily and are around 2.5- 3.5 hours without delays.

When it comes to flights, the only option is from Athens. This is an excellent option if you prefer a short duration, as it is only a 30-minute ride!
While there is no Uber service on Syros, unlike Santorini, you’ll find plenty of taxis and transfers upon arrival at the ferry port or airport to reach your hotel or destination. Additionally, you’ll find that taxi prices in Syros are significantly lower than the taxi and Uber prices on islands such as Mykonos.
How Many Days Do You Need in Syros?
While you could easily spend as long as you want leisurely exploring Syros, at minimum, two to four days is enough time to see the island’s main attractions.
With this timeframe, you will have enough time to explore Ermoupoli, Ano Syros, and at least one of the beaches.
However, extending for a week or more will be worthwhile if you wish to attend events like the International Film Festival or explore every inch of the island. Conversely, a short trip should suffice if you prefer a relaxing beach vacation.
Ultimately, the correct answer of how many days to spend in Syros will depend on your preferences. There is a lot to appreciate on this island, and more time allows you to immerse yourself in the island’s culture further.
